In a sense, much of the album's noisier moments play like an answer to the soundtrack to the Jean Rollin filmed dream sequences of Jess Franco's \"A Virgin Among the Living Dead\". Given the album's\u003cbr\u003enamesake, one can't help to think Giuliani had Euro-horror cinema on his mind while channeling these soundscapes.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003cbr\u003eUnlike the suffocating characteristics of the Exile album, Giuliani uses The Beyond to experiment with silence and space. Throughout \"Before Silence\" the listener is faced with seeming\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e inactivity quietly under a thick layer of fog and tape hiss. While \"Under\" will\u003cbr\u003eundergo prolonged moments of near silence in its conclusion. It's only in the piercing horror feedback of the finale \"My Eyes Still See\" which brings the listener back from the lull in what is the most disconcerting of all Drift compositions. It's in these elongated sequences where Giuliani truly expands on his ideas, allowing him to change several directions in the narrative of the track.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003eEarthquake concludes the projects cooperation with Slaughter Productions and Drift would continue forward with a discography taking on new and different guises. However Gabriele pushes things even further. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe textures more bombastic, the bass frequencies more suffocating, \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003ethe reverbs trail longer. All sense of subtlety and\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003erefinement wiped\u003cbr\u003eaway. Stark forms emerge from a sparseness which defies titles. Seany’s compositions evoke a sense of endless variation much like Robert Ryman’s paintings.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cem\u003eOutrenoir, Shredded Nerve’s stygian homage to Pierre Soulages, transports us to the bowels of a cave without a torch. In the pitch-dark, ghostly echoes appear painted on the walls in shadow, dark pigments, and soot. We’re creeping along on an abandoned mine rail. There is nothing and yet everything to see here. The edge of textures and pitfalls are obscure but this is a radiant darkness reflecting our psychological fears of the unseen.
